Britain's unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in the three months to August, down from 4.9% and better than City economists expected, giving Chancellor John Healey a lift before next month's budget. Employment rose by 102,000. But job vacancies dropped by 21,000 to 691,000, the first time below 700,000 since 2021, with small firms blaming higher labour costs. Regular pay growth edged up to 3.7% too.
