UK tinned mackerel now Chilean jack mackerel due to overfishing
Many UK supermarkets are now selling tins labelled "mackerel" that contain Chilean jack mackerel, a different fish, because of overfishing concerns. Chilean jack mackerel has fewer calories and about half the omega-3 of true mackerel, leading to consumer complaints. Mackerel stocks in the northeast Atlantic have fallen by three-quarters in the last decade, with quotas set higher than scientific advice.
