Super Typhoon Bavi hits US Pacific islands with catastrophic 290km/h winds
Super Typhoon Bavi, a Category 5 storm, made landfall on Monday morning on Rota, a US island in the western Pacific, bringing destructive winds and torrential rain. The National Weather Service warned of "catastrophic damage" and a "life-threatening situation" across the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam. Many residents on Saipan and Tinian were still without power from Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which hit in April, causing about $1.5 billion in damage and killing 17 people.
