Heat killed an estimated 50,000 people in 854 European cities this summer, a record death toll, according to scientists at Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. They blame climate change for about two in three deaths. The UK saw an estimated 4,354 heat deaths. Italy was hardest hit, and people aged over 85 made up almost half the toll.
