Since July 2022, 1,100 people received convictions for illegal UK entry

More than 1,100 people, some torture and trafficking survivors, have been convicted for illegal arrival in the UK since July 2022. The Home Office introduced the offence in 2022 to deter those arriving by small boat or lorry. Campaigners question if prosecutions are compatible with the refugee convention, as many claimed asylum before arrest.
