Sexually transmitted shigella cases growing faster and resisting antibiotics
Sexually transmitted shigella, a gut infection, is seeing its case numbers grow at double the rate of other strains. A study found about 70% of these strains resist at least one key antibiotic, making it a “distinct public health threat”. The infection primarily impacts gay, bisexual, and other men who engage in sexual activity with men, with instances in England increasing by 25% over two years.
