Bird flu wiped out the Pagham Harbour colony in 2022, but conservation work has helped seabirds recover along England’s south coast. RSPB staff and volunteers protected nesting sites across 52,000 hectares of coastline and estuary, using fencing, patrols and new islands to keep predators away. Black-headed gulls also produced 504 fledglings in 2026, up from 51 last year.
