Rhine nears record low as drought grips Europe

Water levels on the Rhine fell to 25 centimetres at the Kaub checkpoint in Germany, matching lows last seen in 2018. Forecasters said levels could drop to 24 centimetres, which would be the lowest since records began in 1880. Hungary shut its only nuclear plant for the first time in 44 years due to low cooling water on the Danube.
