Refugee sponsorship opens next month, first arrivals not until 2027
Charities and non-profits can apply to sponsor refugees from October under new safe and legal routes, Shabana Mahmood told Labour's conference on Monday. Local communities and universities will be able to host refugees, but the first arrivals are not expected until autumn 2027. The home secretary said there was nothing fair about uncontrolled borders, pointing to three more deaths in the Channel on Monday.
