Pound hits highest level since August as traders bet on rate rises

UK inflation climbing to 2.9% in July and a 40% jump in crude oil prices have fuelled bets on higher borrowing costs. Financial traders are currently expecting at least two rate increases from the Bank of England by next March. However, the bank's governor Andrew Bailey told parliament on Tuesday that policymakers do not have a fixed plan to keep raising them.
