He was being treated for cancer at The Christie hospital, Manchester City Council said in a statement on Tuesday evening (October 13). Karney, a Labour councillor for Harpurhey since 1979, chaired the committee that oversaw the city centre's rebuilding after the 1996 IRA bombing. Council leader Garry Bridges called him "a giant of Manchester politics", and he came up with the annual Manchester Day.
