Around 3,000 children are awaiting adoption in the UK due to an insufficient number of families signing up to provide care. The number of children needing adoptive families rose from about 1,980 in 2021/22 to 3,010 by 2025/26. Adopter registrations fell by 15% and approvals dropped by 25% over the same period.
