Novartis drug that cut cholesterol particle 78% failed to stop heart attacks

Graphic: BriefTea

Pelacarsen, a Novartis injection, was tested on 8,322 people with high Lp(a), an inherited cholesterol particle that clogs arteries and helps form clots. It cut Lp(a) by 78%, against 13% on a placebo, yet strokes, heart attacks and heart deaths didn't fall. Trial leader Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic called it "completely neutral", and Novartis will stop developing the drug for heart disease.
