New York hospital replaces 12 nurses with AI software

Montefiore hospital in New York City laid off 12 utilization review nurses on Sunday, replacing them with AI-powered software. The New York State Nurses Association, which represents the nurses, says the layoffs violate a new contract won after a strike in January 2026. Nurses are concerned about the impact on quality of care from AI being used by employers in patient care settings without prior testing.
