NASA finds new power for Voyager 2, extending its life

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory devised a plan, nicknamed "Big Bang," to keep Voyager 2's three remaining instruments working for at least an extra year. The spacecraft, now 49 years in flight and about 13.3 billion miles from Earth, runs on heat from decaying plutonium. NASA plans to apply the same power-saving strategy to its even more distant twin, Voyager 1.
