Under the Home Office's new "earned settlement" plan, ten years becomes the standard wait for indefinite leave to remain, the right to stay permanently. Those earning £50,271 can still settle after five years, and £125,141 earners after three, if they meet the pay level in most of the years beforehand. Anyone with a criminal conviction, unpaid government debt or a serious immigration breach faces refusal.
