Metro Bank makes a record £60.7m profit while other lenders close branches

Earnings shot up by 41% in the first half of 2026, largely driven by a push into small business loans. Rather than shutting down sites like major banking giants, the company is heading north with upcoming branches in Nottingham, Leeds and Newcastle. It also expanded its overall lending to £9.2bn after offloading older personal debts early last year.
