London's main stock markets rise as strong Unilever sales offset falling bank shares

The FTSE 100 index went up 0.5%, driven by a massive 6.8% jump for the consumer goods giant Unilever. The firm behind brands like Dove and Vaseline enjoyed its best quarterly growth in over ten years despite tight household budgets. At the same time, shares in Barclays dropped 5.1% even though the bank announced a 17% increase in profits.
