London councils are fighting over a £128m bid to fix Hammersmith Bridge
Hammersmith and Fulham Council has asked the transport department for the money just to keep the crossing open to pedestrians and bikes. Conservative politicians in neighbouring Wandsworth are furious because the funding push abandons ideas to bring cars back. Restoring full traffic access would cost £300m, and the bridge has already been shut to drivers for seven years.
