Jakarta now world's most populous city: UN
Jakarta, Indonesia has surpassed Tokyo as the world's most populous city with nearly 42 million residents, according to the latest UN World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report. Dhaka, Bangladesh ranks second with 40 million people, while Tokyo drops to third place with 33 million. Nine of the top ten most populated cities are now located in Asia, reflecting rapid urbanization trends. The number of megacities worldwide has grown from eight in 1975 to 33 in 2025.
