The first 43 locations for the scheme have been revealed, with households living within 1,600ft (500m) of upgraded infrastructure eligible. These discounts, which start early next year, will be paid for by adding about 80p a year to all energy bills. Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated that the upgrades are essential for the distribution of renewable power and for enhancing energy security.
