English university fees up 879% to £9,790 a year since 1998

English university students' tuition fees have increased by a "staggering" 879% since their introduction in 1998, leaving undergraduates with potential debts of up to £81,000. The SNP criticised Andy Burnham, accusing him of breaking a promise to scrap fees. In contrast, Scottish students leaving university in 2025 owed about £17,990 because they do not pay fees.
