England's rivers fail all chemical checks; 14.3% meet ecological standards.
New government data shows all of England's rivers, lakes, and estuaries failed chemical status checks due to persistent pollutants. The Environment Agency found mercury, Pfos, and PBDEs were the main culprits, which don't break down and build up in nature. Only 14.3% of surface waters met good ecological standards, and good chemical status isn't expected until 2063.
