England's record summer caused trees to shed leaves by mid-October

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), a gardening charity, says drought-sensitive trees at its Wisley garden in Surrey had lost their leaves by mid-October. Shallow roots can't reach deeper groundwater, so trees drop leaves to save water, and most of England and Wales is still in drought. The RHS expects an earlier, shorter colour peak, with more reds, ambers and purples this year.
