Developing countries now spend more on debt than education, says UN

UNESCO said 113 developing countries spent more repaying foreign debt than funding education in 2025, with sub-Saharan African nations paying 3.6 times more. The UN agency said shrinking international aid is making the problem worse, with global education aid down 21% since 2023. It warned some countries have already lost more than 40% of education aid.
