Michel Simon, the Swiss-born French cinema legend known for his gravelly voice and expressive performances in films like L'Atalante and Boudu Saved from Drowning, earned the ultimate accolade from Charlie Chaplin who declared him the greatest actor in the world. The eccentric performer, who preferred living with animals over humans, kept pet monkeys in his bohemian Parisian home and became one of French cinema's most distinctive character actors, working with renowned directors including Jean Renoir, Jean Vigo, and Marcel Carné throughout his five-decade career.
