Burnham blocks 1,000 sex offenders from early prison release
Prime minister Andy Burnham announced that rapists and child sex offenders will be blocked from an upcoming early release scheme. The changes mean about 1,000 fewer criminals will leave custody early when the policy begins in October to tackle severe prison overcrowding. Officials confirmed that violent offenders serving longer terms can still be freed halfway through their sentences.
