Scientists have found that monocyte development, which creates immune cells to help the brain, is impaired in both Alzheimer's patients and mice. Bone marrow impairment is due to a maladaptive response, driven by a type I interferon protein. Blocking this protein or replacing bone marrow could boost beneficial brain repair cells and reduce disease progression.
