The black robin was named New Zealand's Bird of the Year after receiving a record 105,000 votes. The tiny bird, found only in the Chatham Islands, was brought back from just five birds in the 1970s through a conservation project. Its population has now grown to about 350 adult birds, but more pest-free habitat is needed for its continued growth.
