Rain began falling on Saturday night during Durga Puja, a Hindu festival, causing crowds near a pavilion to run for cover and fall on the road. West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari said a seven-year-old girl was among the dead, and that 25 people were being treated for injuries. Police have detained some pavilion organisers and security staff, and several of the busiest venues were told to close.
