Air pollution slows marathon times, hitting non-elite runners hardest

For every microgram-per-cubic-metre increase in nitrogen dioxide, men's finishing times were 1.43 minutes slower and women's 1.56 minutes slower. A study of 2.7 million performances across six major marathons found non-elite runners' times rose by 2.12 minutes.
