UK cash payments to drop to 4% by 2035, but 1.4M still rely on it

Notes and coins made up only 8% of our spending in 2025, dropping from 45% a decade earlier. A new report from UK Finance, the banking industry body, shows nine in ten adults now manage their accounts digitally. While smartphone payments keep growing, about 1.4 million people still rely mostly on physical money for their everyday shopping.
