Extinct Caspian tiger returns to Kazakhstan after 70 years
Kazakhstan has become the first country to bring back the Caspian tiger, which was thought extinct, by releasing a female tiger named Umit. This follows over a decade of planning and a scientific discovery that the Caspian tiger is almost identical to the Amur tiger. More tigers will join Umit, with plans to create a self-sustaining population of about 50 in the Ile-Balkhash nature reserve.
