Prison recalls in England and Wales rise 28% in one year
Figures show a big jump in offenders being sent back to prison after being released on licence in England and Wales. In the year ending March 2026, licence recalls totalled 51,419, which represents an increase from 40,259 in the preceding year. Most of these recalls are for breaking licence conditions like missing appointments, rather than new crimes.
