London's FTSE 100 index rose 0.4% on Monday to 10,781 points
Telecom shares gained 3% as Vodafone grew 4.5% after upgrading its performance outlook following its Safaricom deal. Drugmaker AstraZeneca added 1.6% after beating second-quarter profit expectations, while Premier Inn owner Whitbread grew 2% on Monday. Conversely, British energy shares dropped 2.5%, and engineering firm Vesuvius fell about 10% after first-half profits dropped.
