EU bans Sudan gold imports to cut civil war funding
The trade has been a main way for both sides to fund the fighting which started in April 2023, according to rights groups. EU foreign ministers also banned exports of mercury and cyanide, chemicals used in gold mining. UN experts say over half of Sudan's gold is smuggled out each year.
