UK proposes hefty fines for tech firms that fail to stop scam adverts
Social media platforms and search engines could face fines of up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue, whichever is higher, under Ofcom's proposed crackdown on scam adverts. The regulator wants companies to remove scam advertisers, permanently block repeat offenders and strengthen safeguards for AI-generated ads. If approved, the new rules are expected to take effect in 2027.
