Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be smaller to cut spiralling costs
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature only 10 sports, down from 18 in 2014, and have around 2,000 fewer athletes. The stripped-back event aims to cut costs from over £700m in Birmingham 2022 to £160m, following original host Victoria pulling out. Organisers believe a smaller, cheaper Games offers a sustainable template, with Ahmedabad hosting in 2030.
