Barclays profits jump to £6.1bn as market volatility boosts trading
The British lender launched a new £1bn share buyback after its profit jumped 17 per cent in the first half of the year. Chief executive CS Venkatarishnan said the bank wants to grow its private banking and wealth management division to reduce reliance on investment banking. Meanwhile, group finance director Anna Cross urged the government not to increase taxes on the banking sector.
