About 17% of all reported incidents during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the UK were domestic abuse, with 391 arrests made. Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the UK Football Policing National Lead, linked the increase directly to increased alcohol consumption. He suggested extended pub licensing hours for late matches, sometimes given at short notice, made it harder for police to plan.
