EU extends chat-scanning law until 2028, but excludes encrypted messages
EU governments have backed a temporary rule letting messaging apps check for child abuse material, but it won't apply to encrypted services like WhatsApp. The European Parliament had already voted to extend the measure until April 2028, after it lapsed in April. Privacy advocates still worry about scanning private messages, even with the new exclusion.
