Japan strongly protests Putin's first visit to disputed islands
Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first visit to the far-eastern Kuril Islands on Thursday, which are also claimed by Japan. Japan's Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, conveyed a "strong" protest, asserting the islands belong to Japan by right. In 1945, as World War II drew to a close, the Soviet Union took control of the volcanic islands.
