Carers face huge debts despite allowance system reforms
Scores of unpaid carers were asked to repay over £20,000 last year, with hundreds more at risk of prosecution. In 2025-26, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) sought £33 million for 32,559 overpayments. Campaigners say the system remains outdated, with some debts going undetected for up to five years.
