Sunken Soviet nuclear submarine still leaking radiation in Norwegian Sea
A Soviet nuclear submarine, the Komsomolets, which sank in 1989, is still releasing radioactive material into the Norwegian Sea. A March 2026 report identified a degrading reactor that periodically releases visible plumes of radioactive material. Although current levels are not believed to be harmful due to rapid dilution, experts warn that corrosion and changing currents could increase the risk of contamination.
